1. America received a present on July 4, 1884. The gift was from France, and it was huge. This big, beautiful, and special gift was the Statue of Liberty!
2. The statue was built in France and it had to be shipped to the United States. So workers took the statue apart and put the pieces into 214 crates.
3. The Statue of Liberty is made from a metal called copper. New copper is brown but its color changes over time. That’s why the statue now looks green!

4. A secret box is buried under the statue. Inside are a copy of the U.S. Constitution a picture of the statue’s designer and 20 bronze medals.
5. Thousands of people visit the statue each week. They can go inside the statue but they can’t go into its torch book or arms.
6. Visitors can explore the statue’s crown but they have to climb 354 steps! Don’t skip this climb or you’ll miss the amazing view of New York City.
