Fascinating Facts About Hibernation

Practice using commas as you learn about hibernation

From the March/April 2021 Issue

Directions: On your own document, add 11 missing commas to the following sentences. We’ve done number 1 for you.

1. In cold weather, some animals’ bodies slow down to help them survive. This is called hibernation. Some of these animals will not pee, poop, or eat for months!

2. Hibernating animals are quiet cold and still. Wood frogs barely move at all so most of the water inside their bodies freezes!

3. When animals hibernate they breathe more slowly. Grizzly bears slow down to about one breath per minute and some bats breathe only once per hour.

4. Hibernation is not the same as sleep but some animals treat it like a giant slumber party. Some garter snakes snuggle up and hibernate in groups as big as 8,000!

5. Unlike other bird species common poorwills hibernate. The small birds hibernate in rocks logs or fields.

6. Some animals slow down during the summer but then it’s called estivation. To survive hot weather crocodiles bury themselves in mud to stay cool.
