Halloween is just around the corner. That means many kids will be picking out a costume, like an animal, a superhero, or a famous singer! But have you ever wondered about the history of Halloween costumes?

Thousands of Years

People have worn Halloween costumes for thousands of years. The first Halloween celebration took place in Ireland more than 2,000 years ago. It was a festival that marked the end of summer and the start of winter. People danced to music, ate many delicious treats, and lit roaring bonfires. They also wore costumes!

Long ago, winter was difficult. Temperatures became dangerously cold. Many people got sick. Some didn’t survive the tough conditions. It could feel scary.

Back then, people were afraid that bad luck would find them. So they disguised themselves by wearing costumes. The first costumes were made of animal skins and horns.

Costumes of Their Own

About 150 years ago, many people moved from Ireland to the United States. They brought many traditions with them—including wearing costumes! Before long, other people in America wanted to wear costumes to celebrate Halloween too. They started making costumes of their own.

Some wore makeup to look like clowns. Others made masks out of paper bags. People also put sheets over their bodies to look like ghosts. Spooky!

In the 1950s, TV became wildly popular. When Halloween rolled around, people wanted to dress up as characters from their favorite shows. Stores started selling costumes of characters like Mickey Mouse and Popeye. They were a hit!

Costumes Today

Today wearing a Halloween costume is a fun tradition for many kids. (Some people even dress up their pets in costumes!) You can buy premade costumes from stores or make your own designs at home. Will you dress up for Halloween this year?
