We asked Disaster Squad author Rekha S. Rajan some questions!

Standards

Question: What are the Disaster Squad books about?

Rekha Rajan: The books are about the Jackson family. They travel around the country helping communities during natural disasters, like tornadoes, hurricanes, and blizzards.

Q: What kinds of stories do you write?

RR: I write realistic fiction, which is a mix of fiction and nonfiction. My stories are fiction because they are about a family I made up and their adventures. But the facts about natural disasters are all real. Research is a big part of my process. So is my imagination!

Q: What inspired you to write this issue’s story, “Rescue in the Snow”?

RR: The story is actually based on a true event! I was researching and found a story about a rabbit trapped next to a school. In real life, the school custodian saved the rabbit. In my story, the Jacksons saved it!

Q: What writing advice do you have for Storyworks 3 readers?

RR: We all have stories within us, even if it’s just sharing something that happened during the day. The best place to start is by pulling from your own experiences. You’re the only person who can tell your story!
