Yaaawn. It’s time to sleep. You grab your book and are about to climb into bed when you realize: You need to put on pajamas! Have you ever wondered where your favorite sleeping outfit got its start?

These cozy clothes actually began as regular pants! In the 1200s, people in the Middle East and South Asia wore loose, comfortable pants. The pants helped them stay cool in the heat. They were called “pajamas.”

The word “pajama” comes from a language called Persian. In Persian, “pa” means “leg.” “Jama” means “clothes.” So “pajama” means “clothes for legs”!

A New Idea

Over time, pajamas spread to other places. In the 1600s, people in Europe started wearing the pants around town.

At the time, men and women there wore nightgowns to sleep. Then some men had an idea: What if they wore pajamas to bed? The comfy pants were a sleep success! They were easier to move around in than nightgowns.

By the 1800s, sleeping in pj’s was popular with men around the world. But most women still wore nightgowns.
